The latest issue of ArteScienza Magazine (No. 11, June 2026) features an in-depth article dedicated to the research conducted by Prof. Angela Bellia, Principal Investigator of the VOICING project (Voicing Spaces: Towards an Aural Architecture in the Past).
In this feature, Sandra Fiore provides a comprehensive overview of Prof. Bellia’s scientific trajectory, exploring the intersection of archaeology, musicology, and digital technology. The article illustrates how the project employs cutting-edge methodologies—ranging from 3D modelling and acoustic simulation to artificial intelligence—to reconstruct the intangible heritage of the ancient world.
The research highlights how ancient theatres were meticulously conceived as acoustic “machines,” designed not only to accommodate spectators but to modulate and amplify the soundscapes of social and ritual life. Through detailed case studies, the article demonstrates how nature and human artifice converged to create unique acoustic environments. Furthermore, it details the “virtual reactivation” of ancient instruments, such as the 6th-century BCE aulos from Poseidonia, which has been reconstructed through high-resolution CT scans and 3D printing.
